Anemia from iron deficiency

Anemia occurs when the total amount of iron in our bodies is low compared to normal levels for an adult of the same sex and is accompanied by a decrease in red blood cells.

Primary causes:
• Diet low in iron
• Increased iron need: pregnancy, menstrual bleeding, breast feeding
• Chronic or acute blood losses: Abundant or abnormal menstrual bleeding, hemorrhages, peptic ulcers or cancer
• Poor iron absorption
• Blood dialysis
Most common symptoms:
• Paleness
• Heart palpitations
• Loss of appetite
• Headaches
• Fatigue
• Nausea

It is recommended to saturate iron reserves in the body through supplements, complemented by a diet rich in iron.

Advice to increase iron content in the diet:
• Increase the frequency and quantity of red meat consumption.  Eat beef liver, chicken liver, pork liver and blood sausage.
• Increase consumption of foods rich in iron, such as: dried chilis, walnuts, garbanzo beans, dried fruit, turkey, tuna, eggs, beans, sesame, lentils, shell fish and peanuts.
• Foods that contain vitamin C help iron absorption: broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage, oranges, grapefruit, lemons, mandarins, pineapple, papaya, peppers, tomatoes and potatoes.
• When you ingest iron supplements for anemia, take them with orange juice or another citrus fruit.
Some beverages interfere with iron absorption and should be avoided: coffee, black tea, dark beers and wine.
